Vodafone: the 5G improves the safety of your car

FASTER AND WITH LESS ERRORS – The new, fast mobile networks, 5G will also help to improve safety on the roads. As well as allowing you to transfer more data in the same unit of time, in fact, have a latency much lower (the time between sending a request and the arrival of the response can get only 10 milliseconds) and a low rate of error: if you are with 4G a data packet in a thousand is “lost”, with the 5G you get to one in a million. These two last aspects that will help you make the most effective electronic safety systems of the car, that “they’ll talk” between them in real time, and with the certainty that the information arrivals. A future that, however, is ready for use at The Track, the safe driving centre Aci-Sara Arese, the Vodafone has made us “first-hand” what may be the cars of tomorrow, taking advantage of the cars of the group FCA (which is a partner in the operation, together with Pirelli, Marelli, Politecnico di torino and the Municipality of Milan, the Lombardy Region, and many others) specially modified.

FOUR PROJECTS – The choice of Milan to present the project is almost taken for granted, seen that already more than 80% of the metropolitan area is covered by the signal 5G; but the signal for Vodafone is already present also in Bologna, Naples, Rome and Turin. Four pilot-projects for road safety presented, based on a total of 41 launched by Vodafone in Italy. The first is theUrban Cross Traffic co-operative: it is a system of automatic braking emergency evolved, where a car communicates to the vehicles surrounding your location and receive that of others. If two is likely to be in contact (for example, because a comes of the side and is hidden by a building), before the driver is alerted of the danger and, if it does not react, it will automatically activate the brakes. With the See-Through (“see through”), the electronics receives the video in high resolution captured from the vehicles that precede us: this allows, for example, to “see” what is in front of the truck that we are following, allowing us to make a overtake with more confidence.

INTELLIGENT TYRE – The solution Highway Chauffeur is dedicated to the guide in the column of: receiving the position and speed of other vehicles, improves the fluidity of the drive. It also reduces the risk of rear-end collision, the fuel consumption and travel times, and saw that all the cars will tend to move simultaneously, and not with an “elastic effect” of the row. The’Intelligent Speed Adaptation and Control, finally, brings together data from disparate generated not only from other cars but also by “intelligent” objects, such as traffic lights, construction sites, and video cameras to create a virtual map of the surrounding area. This project is part of the tire with sensors with Pirelli, which will debut next year: it is able to detect any situations of “floating” of the rubber on the water (aquaplaning), the conditions of adherence of the asphalt and so on, and to communicate them to the car, and adapt accordingly the response of their devices (Esp, brake, electronic suspension, etc). Through the networks 5G, it is then possible to communicate these data to the cars that are approaching the area.

THE ROAD IS LONG – the power of The 5G is not only in the performance of the network, but also in the possibility it gives to communicate with each otherdirectly (according to a standard expected, but will be implemented not before a year or two) or through a computer mounted next to the antenna of the nearest land, and that, if necessary, processes them, before sending them to other cars, without which the data should arrive via the web to a central computer, hundreds of miles away: is the so-called Edge Computing. This allows, for example, to analyze more quickly the images taken by a camera, identifying the pedestrian, bike, auto “not intelligent” and so on, and send their position to the cars nearby. Obstacles to diffusion of these systems, however, are numerous: one part of its privacy policy and of the circulation, passing to the european ones (which for the direct communication between the cars have so far favoured a different technology, but less performance, the IEEE 802.11 p, also known as DSRC), ending up with the standard of communication between cars of different brands, that are still missing. All issues will be resolved as soon as possible.
