WANT to BE AT the TOP – little more than a month from the presentation of the seventh generation of the Mercedes S-Class (scheduled for 2 September), the German house spreads more information on the security systems of the sedan, which, by tradition, is a candidate to become one of the safer cars on the market. The Mercedes has worked a lot both with regard to active safety, thanks to an increasingly sophisticated driving assistance system, both in terms of the passive, with devices able to mitigate the consequence of an impact.
THE FRONT AIRBAGS in the REAR – Among the latter are but the airbags in the rear, at the absolute debut on a passenger car. Being designed for occupants in the rear (the drivers are contained on the back of the front seats) were completely redesigned and the shape and form of the drive mechanism, which is more progressive. In the moment of the impact, in fact, is not the entire airbag to inflate, but the two structures support the side in the shape of a wing, which contain within them an airbag that opens between them, and that is inflated by the surrounding air through special valves (designed in such a way that the air can not escape when the rear passenger collides with the airbag).
The Mercedes in the design phase had to deal with major critical issues; these drivers need to be able to impact the less possible on the subjects that sit on the rear seats, which can also be children on the child seats. That is why we have opted for a type of airbag that can “wrap” the subject. To further increase the safety of the occupants of the rear seats, there is also safety belt inflatable.
THE ELECTRONIC SUSPENSION – To reduce the possible consequences of an accident, we also think the new electronically controlled suspension and active body control, which have a specific function, pre-safe, which, by exploiting the information coming from the sensors of the car, identifies an imminent danger, and raise the car by 80 mm, allowing you to dissipate shock in the most rigid of the body such as the brancardo (the lower part of the door sill). In addition, the system pre-safe will inflate a cushion of air under the front seats, moving them towards the center of the passenger compartment, which is structurally the most secure. The electronic suspension in addition to the function of pre-safe, can count to 20 sensors, a stereo camera and five processors, which analyze the situation of the road surface 1,000 times per second; with the possibility to manage individually each wheel, and adjust the suspension stiffness so as to have the maximum comfort in all contexts.
THE STEERING WHEELS and REAR – Comfort that is also improved from thesteering axle, rear (customers can choose between two variants, one with a steering angle up to ten degrees and up to 4.5 degrees), which, under the 60 km/h, makes it easier to manoeuvre on narrow spaces at high speeds contributes to improve the stability (the wheels sterzano in the same direction as the front).
THE PARK ASSIST – Despite the size of the new Mercedes S-Class, thanks to the park assist automated (optional), which can count on a 12 ultrasonic sensors, 360° camera (supported in the action by four additional cameras), and emergency braking in reverse, according to the manufacturer is able to ensure parking maneuvers easier, even in the most complex situations.
